This is a fantastic opportunity for an exceptional individual to oversee and implement Christian Aid Ireland’s Programme Strategy on human rights, peacebuilding, gender equality & women’s empowerment, humanitarian response and policy and advocacy work. CAI has piloted innovative approaches such as adaptive programming and this role will ensure that CAI continues to learn, improve and ultimately have a meaningful impact on tackling inequality, exclusion and poverty in countries across Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. The role manages the international programme of Christian Aid Ireland, including development and humanitarian work. This includes managing the relationship between Christian Aid Ireland and key institutional donors such as Irish Aid and EU and developing strategies to grow the funding portfolio. This role is responsible for the strategic management and development of the Programme Development Unit (PDU) within Ireland and manages related budgets. CAI is the centre of excellence on CA’s strategic thematic area of From Violence to Peace and this role works closely with the Head of From Violence to Peace and oversees the Ireland funded aspects of this work. The post holder meets regularly with Christian Aid’s International Department Senior Management Team to ensure programmatic coherence between Christian Aid and Christian Aid Ireland. The role also provides leadership for the growth and development of Christian Aid Ireland as part of the Leadership Team and reports to the Chief Executive of Christian Aid Ireland.
Key outcomes
· To ensure an effective and efficient international programme of work is in place which is in line with the CAI programme strategy managing related risks and budgets.
· Service all Institutional Donor contracts with optimum efficiency and effectiveness and to engage in planning for future long-term support.
· To provide efficient and effective management support to the Programme Development Unit which includes personnel who are responsible for Monitoring and Evaluation, Governance, Human Rights, Gender issue, Advocacy and Policy, Humanitarian and Programme support.
· To represent Christian Aid Ireland on groups and networks both internally and externally which contribute to the development of policy and programme approaches.
· To provide leadership within the context of the Leadership Team in Ireland, reporting to the Chief Executive.
· To seek and respond to funding opportunities from new sources in order to support the overseas programme work.
To represent Christian Aid at a senior level, when required to do so.
Applied skills/knowledge and expertise
Essential
- Post graduate level degree in international relations, development studies or related areas.
- Extensive programme/project and people management experience ideally managing large complex programmes
- Experience of working overseas in international development, including development and humanitarian programmes leading on programme development, support, monitoring and reporting
· Familiarity with programme cycle management tools and methods – including strategic planning, programme management and M&E
· Excellent facilitation skills and ability to promote critical thinking and reflection
- Knowledge of institutional funding particularly funding from the Irish government.
- Experience of budgets/financial management, ability to work with financial information
· Demonstrable ability to build effective working relationships across organisations, including at a distance
· Track record of promoting culture change and organisational learning
· Demonstrable ability to influence others and negotiate win-win solutions
· Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to discuss sensitive issues and inspire others to take up new challenges
- A deep understanding of developing countries and the need for a strategic focus on poverty and how the role of advocacy is important in influencing and supporting poverty eradication programmes.
Desirable
· Familiarity with partnership working and the role of civil society/faith-based organisations in development and peacebuilding
