Development Education (DE)

Development Education is a core element of Plan International Ireland’s strategy to increase public awareness of aid and development. Plan International aims to influence public perception and build a constituency support of development through communication using positive messaging that bring a greater understanding of the reality of life in developing countries and build an understanding of global inter-dependency. The Plan International Ireland DE programme engages with schools, civil society organisations and communities through a range of interactive methodology and curriculum development.

General Description of the Role

The primary purpose of this role is to further Plan International Ireland’s development education engagement in Ireland, with a focus on issues that affect children in the developing world. The development education aspect of the role involves engagement with the public through schools, youth groups, third level institutions, societies, adult education groups, networks, etc.

The aim is to inform as many people as possible about Plan International Ireland, its work and the issues faced by children in developing countries. The successful candidate will have full responsibility for the development education strategy during the duration of maternity cover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead in the implementation of Plan International Ireland's Development Education Strategy
  • Build awareness and engage audiences (schools, youth groups, communities etc.) on Plan International Ireland’s programme work and campaign initiatives. These include quality education, birth registration, Plan International’s ‘Because I am a Girl’ Movement and disaster risk management.
  • Support Plans International Ireland's newly established Youth Advisory Panel by organising trainings, meetings and ensuring communication between the panel is maintained
  • Assist in the preparation of funding applications to sustain DE activities.
  • Liaise with the Marketing & Communication team to ensure that opportunities around engagement, communication, media, etc. are maximised.
  • Link developing country experience to an Irish context so the targeted audience can see the commonalities around various issues.
  • Represent Plan International Ireland on the Dóchas Development Education Working Group, in IDEA, and other relevant development education fora.
  • Provide regular progress updates and ensure that all visits, contacts, follow up activity is recorded.
  • Be responsible for DE budgets ensuring maximisation of cost recovery and timely spends.
  • Any other tasks as requested by the Development Programmes' Coordinator or Head of Programmes.

Essential Attributes

  • Background in development education, education, or development ideally with a cross over knowledge of each.
  • Minimum of three year’s relevant work experience
  • A good working knowledge of development and child rights Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
  • Experience in engaging audiences, especially young people, in a creative and informative way to enhance the learning experience
  • Flexibility in relation to working hours and travel within Ireland
  • Fluent in English
  • Self-starter and team player
  • Clean driving licence
