Background
Plan International is a child-centred NGO working in 51 developing countries. With an emphasis on long term sustainable development and emergency response, Plan International assists children and their communities across a range of programmes in areas such as education, child protection, water and sanitation.
Established in 2003, Plan International Ireland is a dynamic organisation that supports Plan International’s work worldwide. Plan International Ireland has over 8,000 regular givers who support our work primarily through child sponsorship. In addition, funding is currently received from a variety of sources primarily the public through various fundraising initiatives, Irish Aid, the EU, corporates, trade unions and trust and foundations.
In addition to its work overseas, Plan International Ireland strives to raise awareness of development issues in Ireland through media relations, key events, advocacy and development education.
The Role
Plan International Ireland is looking for a dynamic individual who is interested in child rights and international development. He/she will support our programme staff in the delivery of our advocacy, research and development education objectives. A particular focus will be on managing events related to our work on disability, and supporting the start up of our Youth Advisory Panel.
He/she will have excellent organisational skills, and be willing to contribute fully to a small dynamic team.
Key Responsibilities
The role is expected to support the programme team to deliver on advocacy and development education initiatives, as well as capture, share and maximise learning within our programme team. Two specific areas of work will involve linking with the Disability Programme Coordinator and Development Education Officer to deliver on some very specific objectives:
Support on Disability Programming
- Prepare strong communication documents on Plan International Ireland’s work on disability including policy and advocacy materials, and project proposals.
- Support and share documentation and learning about our disability pilots.
- Ensure and maintain a strong system for documenting our work (policy and training resources, research, material for project proposals, etc.)
- Collaborate with other local NGOs working on this theme to maximise learning and programme opportunities
- Establish a database of suitable resources and partners related to disability work
- Support Plan International Ireland’s Disability Programme Coordinator with administrative tasks as required eg organising meetings and conferences, purchasing materials, logistic for missions including flights, visas, etc
Support for Development Education
- Support the establishment of Plan’s Youth Advisory Panel including logistics around recruitment, the running of residential courses, and the development of the youth-owned initiatives linked to our work
- Support the development of student/civil society-centred learning topics and tools that use and build on Plan International Ireland’s overseas programmes
- Prepare briefing notes on our programmes that can be used in development education work, as well as by other units.
- Maintain all development education documentation (advocacy and training resources, education modules, research, material for project proposals, etc) and relevant communications
- Support Plan International Ireland Development Education Officer with administrative tasks as required eg organising meetings and conferences, purchase materials, etc
Essential Attributes
- Relevant third level qualification (i.e. social sciences, international development / international relations).
- Excellent command of English and strong report writing, communication and administration skills
- Demonstrate ability to carry out independent quantitative, evidence based research
- Experience of website content management including updating, editing and uploading content to websites, online forums, etc.
- Experience in collating information for databases, websites/reports, research, editing, etc
Desirable Attributes
- Knowledge as a result of study, training and preferably practical experience, of supporting disability and/or development education/youth/active citizenship programmes.
- Ability to speak/understand French
